Why the 10% starting rate had to go

People need to look at the tax system in the round before criticising individual aspects of it. What those who decry the removal of the 10% starting rate conveniently forget is that - due to the tax credit system - it is the wealthy, not the poor, who will lose most from it.

Is this the issue that will cost Labour the next election?

Help the Aged and Friends of the Earth today started legal proceedings against the Government because of alleged inaction over fuel poverty. Will pensioner power force Labour from Government at the next national poll?

Show us your vision, Gordon

Gordon Brown called off an election to show us his vision. It's time he started doing so.

Northern Crock

David Cameron is engaging in a bit of political opportunism this morning, by laying the blame for the Northern Rock credit crisis at the door of the government (well, it beats having any actual policies, doesn't it?).

Without wishing to mention that the liberalisation of the consumer credit market took place under a Conservative government, one has to question the validity of his argument.

The CWU are wrong to escalate industrial action with the Royal Mail

The CWU's campaign of strike action at the Royal Mail is not helping but harming its members in the long run.

Is it Brown trousers time in marginal constituencies?

With the latest contender in the leadership election, Michael Meacher, claiming that New Labour has had it, with Frank Field suggesting the party needs to skip a generation to remain viable, and with the commentariat stating that MPs and CLPs in marginal consitutencies are becoming increasingly concerned that Brown won't be able to prevent a Tory victory at the next election, I wondered what the grass-roots actually thought about a Brown led Labour party?

On why variable refuse-charges are a rubbish idea.

The BBC is reporting that local governments are urging DEFRA to drop plans to introduce "pay-as-you-throw" type charging scheme on refuse. At present, I agree that it is a rubbish idea.

Forget about the drugs, it's being a Tory that David Cameron should regret

There has been a lot of debate overnight and this morning about whether or not taking drugs when young should disbar you from taking high office.

Forget about the drugs, being a Tory should be an obstacle enough...

Things can only get better

In a week which appeared to bring Tony Blair, the Labour Party and the Government to their nadir since 1997, today's Observer comes out in support of the Prime Minister just days after Neil Kinnock says that "history will be kind" to him.

Is this the beginning of the end for New Labour?

Three terms in government, and the prospect of a fourth have been built on the back of a stable economy. Today's inflation announcement could now signal the start of the end for New Labour.

Why is it David Cameron lacks a decent grasp of British constitutional politics?

David Cameron appears to have forgotten what he learnt whilst at Oxford, given his latest suggestion that Gordon Brown won't have a mandate to govern should he win the Labour leadership election.

A health policy we can all agree with

New Year is a time to make changes for the better. The government's decision to raise the legal age of buying tobacco to 18 should be a welcome New Year's resolution.
